The Collective Review

Rare 5-year-old Pirathon wows again! Can you name another wine that has ignited as much passion for the Barossa as Pirathon?

Unquestionably the benchmark on the quality-versus-price scale, we are thrilled to welcome the name Pirathon back to The Wine Collective stable.

It's been a while, but as they say, absence makes the heart grow fonder. When we stumbled upon a small batch of the exceptional 2018 Pirathon Silver Label Shiraz, we had no choice but to seize the opportunity. This wine boasts an impeccable pedigree from the extraordinary winemaker, Adam Clay (whose remarkable Arila Gardens wines are worth seeking out), and displays all the hallmarks of the glorious 2018 vintage. This is a wine that should grace the cellars of all enthusiasts.

Dense and inky in the glass, the nose offers classic Barossa aromas of fruitcake spice, dark plum, blackberry, chocolate tones, and sweet vanillin oak. It's inviting and alluring, drawing you into a palate laden with ripe, dark fruits, peppery spice character, and threaded with fine oak notes on the finish. It's big but balanced, framed by wonderfully ripe, chalky tannins that provide sturdy support through to its lingering and perfumed finish. Approachable now, it will also undoubtedly mature gracefully in the cellar.

For this exceptional vintage, the grapes were sourced from vineyards in Greenock, Moppa, Belvidere, Koonunga, and Ebenezer sub-regions. Each low-yielding vineyard contributes its unique dimension to this Pirathon Shiraz, and when combined, they produce a wonderful blend that is greater than the sum of its parts. Oak plays a lesser influence in this vintage, with 18 months spent in fine French & American barrels.

A wine of this meticulous craftsmanship, paired with the vintage's quality, the winemaker's pedigree, not to mention the lavish oak, would typically be priced far far higher than this deal. Get it while it's hot.

Another solid, well-built Barossa shiraz where the winemaker lets rip with Barossa power, but also brings forth a degree of elegance. The latter is delivered through lively red and black fruits with dried raspberry, dark plum and blackberry that lift the wine contributing an impressive fragrant complexity. Oak is on view but balanced with sweet vanillin, warm toasty notes. Tannins are sturdy but well-resolved and like the 2017 shiraz, alcohol is on the generous side hitting the scales at 15%. It carries it well. This is the bold, generous expression of Barossa shiraz that many of us love. It is of a style to be sure but the quality and intensity of fruit – definitely the hero here – lifts it well above the average. Read more

Tasting Notes

It displays a deep ruby red colour and a complex bouquet of aromas, including ripe dark berries, plums, black pepper and sweet vanilla. On the palate, the Shiraz reveals a full-bodied texture with flavours of dark fruit, mocha and hints of black tea. It has well-integrated tannins and a long, smooth finish.
