2018 Penumbra by Colin Glaetzer Old Vine Shiraz

The Collective Review

The name Glaetzer is pretty much one that guarantees you a beautiful bottle of Aussie red. With a winemaking history that dates back to 1888, the Glaetzer family are pioneers of the Aussie wine industry. A talent for capturing what makes our wines so special runs in the family. Colin Glaetzer and his son Ben are highly acclaimed winemakers (Ben was named Wine Personality of the Year in 2005). This Old Vine Shiraz is elegant, classic, and unmistakably Barossan. The kind of wine that we know you're going to love. Not to mention the vines used to make this wine are up to 70 years old, resulting in a concentrated, intense, and delicious Shiraz that disappears from the glass a little too quickly. This is a go-to wine, a comforting, bold, plush red that is so delicious you'll want to drink it every day.

Oak and Spice and all things nice. Another cracking Old Vine Shiraz. Initially there was plenty of oak present. Lashings of vanilla and brooding red fruits. It all calmed down on the second round. Oak had settled and I found that the spice character had really come alive. This is a wine for those who love the old Barossa style. The vines are 35-70 years old so it has great depth. Its a keeper. In 3-5 years it will be magnifico. Read more

Tasting Notes

Intense very dark red/purple colour. Nose of dark fruits plums blackberry with spice. Elegant but intense juicy flavours with soft fruit and oak tannins . Great balance and length with texture. Great drinking now but will also benefit from 5-10 years of good cellaring.

Winemakers Note

The Shiraz vineyards for Penumbra are from 35-70 years old from the northern region of the Barossa Valley. The 2018 growing season had good winter rainfall with little spring rain. Harvest was early with mild to warm growing conditions. Fermented in small 2 tonne open fermenters and matured in 2-5 year old French and American oak hogsheads. No fining agents used pH 3.43 TA 6.7 g/l
