Why's this wine for you?

Want the very best of the Hunter Valley? Well, this mystery wine is delivering it (and more).

Not only are you tasting Shiraz from the 2018 vintage, arguably the best season of the last decade, but you'll also be landing yourself the winemaking majesty of one the Hunter Valley's most talented winemaking families.

Competitions have been fought and won, with this very wine taking out some serious gongs. Trophy for Best Red Blend & 97 points at the NSW Wine Awards. Gold Medals at the last two Hunter Valley wine shows, oh and did we say its got points? 96 from Halliday, 94 from Campbell Mattinson, 93 from Wine Front, and undoubtedly more to be bagged in the future.

Think future modern, but with a classicist approach, and you are someway there. The vineyard is nearly 50-years-old and has been on the hit-list of some of the regions biggest names. It's also got a small planting of Touriga Nacional added to the mix (a native Portugese varietal) which fits the Hunter region, and its climate, like a glove. If you want serious drinkability, with the perfect melding of mid-weighted fruit, all boysenberry, plum and potpourri, with the savoury undertones of five-spice and charcuterie, look no further.

How's it taste?
A medium red appearance with a purple Hue. The aroma is a lifted cherry spice and potpourri, earthy, spicy with a hint of boysenberry, plum, and blackcurrants. To taste, this wine has a soft mouthfeel of fine-grained tannins, ripe plums, and blackberries
How was it made?
This unique blend of 80% Shiraz gives this wine floral fruit characters with savoury Hunter regional structure and 20% Touriga Nacional which odds structure to the aroma. Fantastic early drinking wine, but 5+ years in the cellar and this will start to sing. The vineyard was first planted in 1968, along the famous Lovedale Road.

James Halliday - Halliday's Wine Companion
An 80/20% blend with exceptional texture to what I term ‘squeaky' tannins. The flow of the fruit is complex. The flavours run to the beat of a different drum, earthy and dark, and with more conventional structure.

Steve Leszczynski - QWine
Sensationally medium-bodied, Mike De Iuliis has made this blend his own in the Hunter Valley and the following this wine is getting continues to snowball. Deservedly so too - it is excellent!Violets and purple flower aromas greet you from the outset. An 80/20 blend, juicy blueberries, licks of Ribena and black fruits plus dark cherries and fine spices all mesh together with absolute ease. Fine satiny tannins bask in the glory of the abundant fruit that strides out before, but time in the glass is its friend. It settles and just curls up seeking a cuddle - oh yeah! This is an absolute beauty and a keeper for the medium term and perhaps a little more. I've told Mike this is too cheap, but hey, the consumer is the winner right now at that price.

Campbell Mattinson - The Wine Front
Shiraz from a vineyard on Lovedale Road in the Hunter Valley. It’s lovely, ripe, even-tempered shiraz and yet there’s plenty going on. It’s meaty, smoky and very nearly bacony with cherry-flavours in good supply and then rounds of jellied citrus and sweet, earthen spice. Tannin is fine but assertive-enough and length is very good. It’s shiraz in fine fettle.

Huon Hooke - The Real Review
Very bright, vivid purple/red colour, essency red cherry and raspberry aromas, very fruit-driven and youthful. Bold, vivid primary fruit, fruit-driven and primal, a bit straightforward on the day. Lively acidity and medium-bodied elegance.
