2018 Montrose Black Shiraz

2018 Montrose Black Shiraz

Sabine Duval

"Dark purple in appearance, surprisingly a violet and vibrant nose, smell like it was recently bottled.fresh, high acidity and lovely finish, big wine, consumers would love this. The oak is very evident, a little on the heavy side with a lasting finish."

Montrose is one of Mudgee's pioneering names, with a history of glorious wines now dating back decades.

This Shiraz is the latest iteration and it's a winner, taking home the Trophy for Best NSW Wine at the Melbourne Wine Awards.

Dark fruited and rich but it's savoury too, with this lovely black olive liveliness and a sense of elegance.

Expert Reviews

95 Points - James Halliday - Halliday's Wine CompanionHand-picked, 20% whole bunches, the balance crushed to small fermenters for 7-day cold soak, a further week on skins after fermentation, 12-15 months in new and used French barriques. An ornate wine, still youthful, of course, but is very, very interesting.
91 Points - Huon HookeVery deep red/purple colour. The bouquet is fresh, plummy and young but also very ripe and concentrated, with almost jammy fruit. The wine is full-bodied and ample, round and rich and fruit-sweet, with abundant balancing tannins, a blast of licorice and some alcohol warmth. The tannins are firm and not especially refined. A very tidy Big Aussie Red.

How's it taste?

A powerful yet elegant expression of the variety, showcasing Mocha, dark chocolate and dark berry fruit. A velvety round tannin profile on the palate is supported by oak maturation.

How was it made?

Harvested at 14-14.5 degree baumé, 10% whole bunch, crushed to a combination of small open and closed fermenters, cold soaked for 7 days, fermented on skins, regularly plunged and left on skins for a further week post-ferment. Gently pressed to French oak barriques (new to 2 year old) to undergo malolactic fermentation and matured for 12-15 months in barrel.
