Barossa-based winemaker Michael Hall came to the Adelaide Hills searching for a specific type of cool-climate Shiraz site, and found it on a 480m vineyard at Mount Torrens. It delivers a heady perfume of wild bramble, herbs and meadow grass – frisky and vivacious. Bold, dark fruit flavours reinforce this, through slinky layers of black cherry, sharp cranberry, dried sage, dark plum and cinnamon, and deliberate black tannic grip through the long finish.

Why's this wine for you?

We've long admired the work of Michael Hall, with this jewel-expert-turned-winemaker delivering a rare level of detail and handmade craftsmanship. And now, with the release of this 98 point scoring Mount Torrens Syrah, our admiration has grown to something akin to worship.

Micheal Hall has worked with some of the best winemakers and estates on the planet. Names like Cullen, Giaconda, Henschke, Shaw + Smith, Veritas, Domaine Leflaive, Meo-Camuzet, and Vieux Telegraphe adorn his resume.

Michael, however, didn't follow the normal Australian winemaker's script. Born in the UK, he trained as a jewel expert, rising up to work in the rarified air of Sotheby's in Switzerland.

At 40 he decided it was time for a change, winemaking beckoned and a new chapter of his life began.

At every turn, Michael's wines are as uncommon as his background - there's a thoughtfulness, an extra layer that the rough and tumble world of Australian wine can miss. You can feel that thoughtfulness, that considered energy running through this Adelaide Hills Syrah.

Searching for the perfect cool-climate site in the Adelaide Hills to craft his wine, Michael came across Fife Road, a vineyard at 480 metres planted over yellow clay. Late ripening and extremely low-yielding, the wine produced is ethereal with an understated power.

How's it taste?
Spicy red fruit compote, fresh violet perfume, sweet cherry clafoutis, five-spice, ginger and gossamer threads of tannin.
How was it made?
The Fife Road vineyard sits at an elevation of 480m in the Mount Torrens region of the Adelaide Hills. Hand-picked on 9 March, all destemmed and wild yeast open fermented, pressed to barrel, 14 months in French oak (20% new), no fining, or filtration. 1930 bottles produced.

Wow. This is decadent and very rich with so much meat, game and ripe fruit. Full, very rich and flavorful. Fantastic finish. A wild wine.

Michael Hall doing elegant Adelaide Hills syrah. Fleshy textured syrah loaded with white pepper, green herbs, red berries. Really pretty, very elegant, that sense of elevated syrah perfume, spice, density but freshness. A beautiful, rolling feast of character and sensuality. Such a delightful thing to luxuriate with. Class act.

Sourced from the Mt Torrens district, 14 months in French oak. The nose swirls with blackberry liqueur notes. The palate is similarly rich in flavour, with a fine chalky tannin coating securing a long, opulent finish.
