This new name for Haut-Batailley’s second wine will be applied to the 2018 vintage onwards. There is clear concentration here with a freshness that denotes careful extraction. It has the power of Cabernet Sauvignon but keeps a sense of lift and juice that you really do want in a second wine. It’s very good, a little chalky on the finish, with an elegant and savoury quality to the fruit. A high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon went into the blend in 2018 because the Merlot was more affected by the mildew, although there was still a good yield of 40hl/ha. 65% first wine, 35% second wine. 3.72pH. 73IPT.

A little austere and closed right now, not giving much, but there are plenty of firm tannins and well-defined blackberry fruits, held in place by a tannic frame that has Pauillac character. Feels subdued but with potential.

Pretty cassis and floral notes glide through, with a supple, plush feel along the edges, showing light herb and mineral hints. A gentle expression of Pauillac. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now. Score range: 87-90

Points: (87-89) The 2018 Verso Haut-Batailley is powerful and intense, but also quite clenched. Super-ripe black cherry, blackberry jam, smoke, dark spice and licorice give the 2018 much of its dark, brooding personality. Ripeness is very much pushed to the edge here. It will be interesting to see how things develop during élevage. The blend is 82% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Merlot.

Points: (84-86) The 2018 Verso de Haut-Batailley has a decadent bouquet of kirsch, crème de cassis and exotic blue fruit. Is it Bordeaux? Maybe not, but it is very seductive. The palate is sweet and opulent on the entry with (again) exotic black and blue fruit, although it is missing some acidity toward the finish, which makes me concerned about its evolution in bottle. One to enjoy in the flush of youth.

82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot. pH 3.72. Barrel sample. New name and new label unveiled for this vintage.Dark but less opaque than many in this vintage. Aromatic and open on the nose, especially in 2018. Pretty, slightly floral note as well as the more restrained black fruit. Dry finesse and – for the vintage – rather delicate. Juicy and beautifully fresh. More approachable than most. Won't be offered en primeur. Score: 16.5/20
