Malbec, when done well, can be a champion in it's own right.

The Argentinians already know this, but here in Australia we're a little slower to catch on. Still, if you want evidence of what this 'blending grape' can do, then look no further than this Margaret River red.

Punchy through the middle, gravelly tannin led and all round up for it, this plump and subtly powerful red is one very easy rider.

How's it taste?

Pronounced notes of plum, blueberry pudding mocha and vanilla pod on the nose, leading to a palate that is plush and layered with plum compote and maraschino cherry flavours. Supple tannins and bright acidity support the vibrant fruit flavour and lingering oak spice.

How was it made?

The Harvest began without fuss on Valentine’s Day. Sauvignon blanc and Semillon followed over the next three weeks with the window for harvest being longer than normal due to excellent crunchy natural acid retention and bright flavours. A stellar start! The usual mid-March cold front came through, washed the dust off the reds and allowed us
to start bringing in shiraz on 17th March. Flavour, colour and phenolics developed well in all reds and patience was rewarded with vibrancy, depth and concentration across all varieties. There was no other pressure than to do it right and do it justice.

The Malbec batch came in clean and vibrant on the 21st March with analytical specs of 14.2°Be, 5.9 g/L TA and 3.66 ph. The Malbec was machine harvested in the cool of the night and crushed to static fermenters. Colour and phenolics were gently extracted using aerate and closed pump over techniques. The batch was co-inoculated for MLF and pressed off skins at or around 0°Be. Once primary fermentation and MLF were completed in tank the wine was transferred to a mixture of new and old French oak barrels and a stainless steel tank with French oak staves for 18 months maturation. The wine was then blended in early November 2019 before being filtered in preparation for bottling in late November 2019.

Who made it?

Driftwood Estate is a boutique winery set in the stunning Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River, Western Australia. Established by Tom and Helen Galopoulos in 1989 on what had previously been a country retreat, the winery immediately received acclaim when its first wine, a Semillon produced in 1993, won a special commendation in a British competition. Driftwood Estate is fortunate to be located in one of the greatest viticultural areas in the world, sourcing super-premium fruit year in year out. With premium quality fruit, their winemaking philosophy is all about protecting and expressing the qualities found in the grapes, so that wine lovers can enjoy the pure, varietal and regional flavours from the Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River.
