How is it possible that the current 2019 Halliday Winemaker of The Year, Deep Woods' Julian Langworthy, can turn out bargain champions too? What can he not do? Juggle? So how does this taste? Well, that's complex. With a combination of barrel and tank fermentation, plus wild and not-so-wild yeasts there really is lots of happening here. Think fresh fruit, but with layers of flavour as well. Again, way too much for a $15 wine.

How's it taste?

The wine exhibits ripe citrus and white stone fruit characters, whilst elegant use of French oak ensures a long and stylish finish. Incredible quality and complexity for the price.

How was it made?

The 2018 Side by Side Chardonnay reflects our continuing dedication to making expressive wines from the Margaret River region that present both finesse and balance. This wine shows amazing fruit depth and generosity yet retains attractive freshness and, most importantly, drinkability. The 2018 vintage was primarily machine harvested. A combination of tank and barrel fermented batches were integral in harnessing the freshness and vibrancy of the wine but also the underlying texture and complexity inherent in great Margaret River Chardonnay. A combination of wild and cultured yeasts were used for fermentation. The wine spent approximately six months in seasoned French oak prior to bottling.

Who made it?

Deep Woods Estate was founded in the northern end of the beautiful Margaret River region of W.A in 1987. It changed hands in 1992 when the Gould family purchased the winery, and was sold again in 2005. Today, it is part of the Fogarty Wine Group (they also own Lakes Folly, Millbrook and Smithbrook wines). The property nests on a ridge overlooking a sea of Jarrah and Marri trees, hence the name Deep Woods. It boasts 16 hectares of sustainably-managed, low-yielding vineyards segregated into 12 blocks planted to Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho, Chardonnay, Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Winemaker Julian Langworthy employs traditional and state-of-the-art techniques to craft small batches of wines of impeccable quality under several different labels. The Deep Woods Reserve label is the ultra-premium range made entirely from estate-grown fruit. The Estate range brings beautiful varietal character and vibrancy while offering excellent value for money, whilst the Ebony, Ivory and Harmony label uses estate and locally sourced fruit. Stylistically they range from complex, zesty, nutty Chardonnays through to cassis and chocolate Cabernet Sauvignons displaying Margaret River typicity.

A really great wine deal must must be accompanied by great value. There is nothing better than getting an incredible bottle of wine for a fraction of what similar quality wines sell for. My recommendations gives you the very best "Value for money" wines at different pricepoints.
