Deep Woods do it again.

With a careful balance between intense Chardonnay flavours delivered with a sense of restraint, this is super Margaret River Chardonnay without the mega pricetag.

Gee that Julian Langworthy is a talented winemaker...

Expert Reviews

94 Points - David Bicknell - Halliday's Wine CompanionEffortless chardonnay, nothing forced. Grapefruit, nectarine, hints of flint and a whiff of smoke. Bright, clean long and linear. Subtle complexity with the fruit at its core, the wine growing as it sits in the glass. Will be better with additional bottle age.
93 Points - James SucklingVery fresh and crisp with bright acidity and lemony fruit character. Medium body. Energetic finish. Drink now.

How's it taste?

Stonefruit and white blossom characters underpinned with complex notes of flint and gun smoke. It is nuanced with tremendous depth of ripe stone-fruit flavour. A hint of oak-driven character further increases structure and length.

How was it made?

2018 was a beautiful, mild vintage with very limited heat spikes during ripening. Chardonnay grapes were harvested in early to mid-February which encouraged expressive aromas, concentrated flavours and lovely acid retention. The majority of the fruit for this wine was handpicked, with a proportion wild fermented in oak (20% new) for three months. The remaining parcels of fruit were kept on lees, with wild fermentation occurring in stainless steel tanks. From there, 50% of the final blend underwent malolactic fermentation before bottling.

Who made it?

Deep Woods Estate was founded in the northern end of the beautiful Margaret River region of W.A in 1987. It changed hands in 1992 when the Gould family purchased the winery, and was sold again in 2005. Today, it is part of the Fogarty Wine Group (they also own Lakes Folly, Millbrook and Smithbrook wines). The property nests on a ridge overlooking a sea of Jarrah and Marri trees, hence the name Deep Woods. It boasts 16 hectares of sustainably-managed, low-yielding vineyards segregated into 12 blocks planted to Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho, Chardonnay, Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Winemaker Julian Langworthy employs traditional and state-of-the-art techniques to craft small batches of wines of impeccable quality under several different labels. The Deep Woods Reserve label is the ultra-premium range made entirely from estate-grown fruit. The Estate range brings beautiful varietal character and vibrancy while offering excellent value for money, whilst the Ebony, Ivory and Harmony label uses estate and locally sourced fruit. Stylistically they range from complex, zesty, nutty Chardonnays through to cassis and chocolate Cabernet Sauvignons displaying Margaret River typicity.

A really great wine deal must must be accompanied by great value. There is nothing better than getting an incredible bottle of wine for a fraction of what similar quality wines sell for. My recommendations gives you the very best "Value for money" wines at different pricepoints.
