The Hunter has had a charmed run in recent years with a succession of great vintages helping to deliver some exceptional red wine in particular.
This Shiraz, from Mike 'how do you pronounce your last name' de Iuliis is another great wine, revelling in its savoury medium bodied form with both bright fruit and without hitting you around the head like some big Aussie reds.

Expert Reviews

96 Points - James Halliday - Halliday's Wine CompanionFrom the celebrated '18 vintage, one of the great years in the Hunter Valley over the past 50. The colour is brilliant crimson, the bouquet and palate present endless portraits of shiraz, but in a calm, measured way. Red, blue, purple and black fruits - they are all here.

How's it taste?

Deep red, with a vibrant purple hue. Savoury, earthy, spicy with a hint of cherry, plum and blackcurrants. Soft mouthfeel of fine grained tannins, ripe plums and blackberries. A medium to full bodied Hunter Shiraz.

How was it made?

One of the great wines of Australia, Hunter Shiraz is powerful as it is subtle, with pure fruit flavours balanced by spice and earthy characters. Round, soft tannins mean it can be enjoyed young, but balance and great length of flavour ensure this will reach its best in 5-10 years.

Who made it?

The De Iuliis vineyard is located on Lovedale Road in the Lower Hunter Valley. It is framed by the magnificent Brokenback mountain range. The property was purchased in 1987 and after several years of soil preparation the first vines were planted in 1990. The De Iluliis family vision is to produce wines of excellent quality that proudly bear their name. They make classic Hunter Valley Semillon, Shiraz and Chardonnay styles, as well as Merlot and Verdelho. A total of 15 hectares of vineyard produces a low yielding annual crush of 100 tonnes, resulting in concentrated fruit. Winemaker Michael De Iuliis aims to maintain a family tradition of outstanding quality.
