Why's this wine for you?
Once described by James Halliday as having a ‘prodigious length and longevity’, and an inner strength akin to the great Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay, the Streicker Old Vine 2017 Chardonnay encapsulates everything that is great about modern Margaret River Chard.Buxom, creamy, mouth-filling and drenched with pear, grapefruit, almond, and Nanna’s old butter-creams, this is how our sun-drenched white wines should be made. The bare bones of this wine come from one of the Margaret River’s oldest vineyards (Ironstone in Wilyabrup) that was once lauded by the late Diana Madeline of Cullen fame as being one of the regions great sites. It’s made by the legendary Bruce Dukes, barrel-fermented and left in fine French oak for just shy of a year. We dug deep into the archives and found Bruce waxing lyrical about this exact wine, saying it’s perfume and fragrance were phenomenal, and carried an amazing scent of jasmine, nutmeg, cinnamon and apple.Compared to the greats of the region, where prices are usually counted in the three figures rather than two, this price is a veritable steal.
How's it taste?
The aromas of this chardonnay are fresh and vibrant, consisting of white pear, freshly cut peaches, braised nuts and lime zest. Unbridled white fruits, jasmine flower and brioche are laced through the palate entry of viscous natural acidity and dense stone fruit flavours. Pure white fruit tannin and subtle tones of creamy French oak lend weight and balance to an otherwise taunt palate. A primary and quenching finish of minerality and persistence.
