Vieilles Vignes - aka old vines - remain a reasonable rarity in France, where vineyards are typically replanted to ensure vine health and keep up yields.

Not with this special Cotes du Rhone, which comes off vines of at least forty years old. Those old vines famously give a little x-factor and extra intensity that is so welcome.

Here, that means a Grenache Syrah blend that has a little more spunk, the flavours typically meaty and chunky but with a sense of earthy meatiness and real tannins.

Many Aussie GSM producers would give an arm and or leg to achieve complexity like this...

How's it taste?

Tasting reveals that this is to be a fine dark red wine, developing a pleasant mixture of fresh fruit aromas, toasty in the middle, with a caramel and mocha finish. Its fruit and aroma richness makes this wine elegant.

How was it made?

The fruit for this wine was sourced from vineyards selected especially for their age, potential productivity, soil types and specific terroir. The wine is made exclusively from vines of 40-years-old, characterised by their twisted and gnarled rootstocks.

The grapes were separated from the bunches before being crushed, and the extraction techniques and gentle pumping over ensured that the delicate flavours were not lost through over-extraction. The wines were carefully matured in the cellars in larger vats, to allow maximum integration in preparation for bottling and to retain the fresh and delicate flavours.

Who made it?

Caves Saint Pierre was created in 1898 by the Bouchon family who already owned the negociant firm of Maison Bouchon. The estate changed hands in 2001 when it was purchased by Skalli Family Wines. The Bouchon family continues to manage the estate and the negociant firm today.

Caves Saint Pierre and Maison Bouchon produces and markets a wide range of wines from the Southern Rhone Valley from a myriad of appellations. Some of the appellations they produce are Chateauneuf-du-Pape, both red and white, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Tavel, Ventoux as well as Cotes du Rhone.
