Expert Reviews

97 Points - James Halliday - Halliday's Wine CompanionHand-picked from a single vineyard, 405 dozen made. A complex wine, but there's no suggestion of its fruit being compromised by winemaker's thumbprints. It has perfect balance and a freshness to the white peach, melon and grapefruit flavours. The finish and aftertaste are the high points of a high class wine.
93 Points - Gary Walsh - The Wine FrontWhite peach, citrus, cinnamon oatmeal, aniseeed, and some struck match. Juicy citrus, slight creaminess, subtle savoury chicken flavour, intensity of acidity with a quartz-like texture, and a brisk lemony finish of good length. Zippy and excellent.
92 Points - James SucklingPlenty of bright peaches and melon here with a flicker of citrus and praline oak influence. The palate has fleshy, smooth and pillowy texture and some spiced, grilled almonds to close. Drink now. Screw cap.

How was it made?

Fruit sourced from a single vineyard in Echunga in the Adelaide Hills. Hand-picked and lightly pressed straight to barrel sans sulphur, the juice was allowed to ferment naturally in french oak barrels (about 25% new) and two ceramic eggs for about ten months. 2018 was a great year for Chardonnay in the Adelaide Hills. It was generally warmer and drier than the last couple of years and the resulting fruit was in great balance - full of flavour but with great acidity. The resulting wine shows the same - power of flavour but retaining finesse.

Who made it?

Bondar are a little family wine company making wines from their favourite regions McLaren vale and Adelaide Hills. The home of Bondar Wines is the iconic Rayner Vineyard in McLaren Vale. They want to make wines that are lighter, brighter, more savoury, structured and intriguing. Different. Over the last few years since Bondar started this endeavour they have been honoured to be named James Halliday's Best New Winery in his 2017 Australian Wine Companion, to have won multiple trophies at the McLaren Vale Wine Shows they have entered, and to have been named one of the Top 50 Young Guns of Wine in 2018.
