Catapult or trebuchet? Whatever you want to call it, there is a giant weapon on the front lawn in front of the Wirra Wirra winery that fires watermelons towards a neighbour winery. No one has been hurt - yet - but if ever there was a McLaren Vale war, you'd want to be on Wirra Wirra's side.

Anyway, this Catapult Shiraz is one of Wirra's best value wines. It combines that mid palate lusciousness and rich weight with the florals of a dollop of Viognier. The result is both fragrant and yet choc full of punch. A big wine, but one that dances around like a winey ballerina.

Expert Reviews

93 Points - Toni Paterson MW - The Real ReviewFragrant red fruit with a little Turkish Delight plus a hint of pepper. Impressive fruit concentration through the length of the palate. A richly-flavoured, approachable wine that is simply outstanding for the price.
92 Points - Nick Stock - jamessuckling.comBright raspberries and red plums with some darker blackberries, leading to a fleshy, plump and pleasure-filled palate. Attractive freshness. Screw cap. Drink now.
90 Points - James Halliday - Halliday's Wine CompanionA full-bodied, rich and generous wine with dark fruits, spiced oak and fine-grained tannins ex oak and fruit. Ready now or whenever a full-flavoured shiraz is called for.

How's it taste?

Appearance: Bright and clear crimson with a fuchsia rim. Nose: A strong core of primary fruit shows bright raspberry and sour cherry alongside sweet blueberry and mulberry. Fresh fruits are countered with dried botanicals - fennel seed and thyme, black pepper, sweet cinnamon and musky white florals. Palate: The silky texture and juicy mid-palate sweetness of mixed berries, plums and spice is supple and immediately approachable. Fruit sweetness is balanced with tart cherry flavour and bright acidity, building to an appealing finish with rounded, grainy tannins.

How was it made?

Shiraz for the 2017 Catapult was harvested over four weeks in April, with a parcel of viognier matched to one of the earlier picks for co-fermentation. Fermented separately, each vineyard parcel was tasted twice daily by the winemakers to monitor extraction. Once the desired levels of colour, flavour and texture for the Catapult style were achieved, ferments were each pressed to tank and later filled to old, French oak. Spending only five to nine months in oak and maintaining the bright, fresh and fruit-driven style, this wine shows silky, textural tannins, vibrant aromatics and juicy plump fruit that is utterly drinkable McLaren Vale Shiraz.

Who made it?

Wirra Wirra was originally established in 1894 and though abandoned after several decades of production was revived by the late Greg Trott in 1969. The winery produces exceptional value, fruit driven wine styles that don’t shy away from ripeness, intensity and oak usage. Wirra Wirra is located approximately four kilometres outside of the township of McLaren Vale in the McLaren Vale wine growing region of South Australia. Wirra Wirra source fruit from estate and selected grower vineyards. Wirra Wirra is the core range but the wines are delineated by tiers including Flagship wines, RGT collection, Church Block, Mrs Wrigley range and the entry level Scrubby Rise wines. The production of these wines is overseen by Chief Winemaker Paul Smith, with able assistance from Tom Ravech and Kelly Wellington. The winery employs modern technology and new world technique to produce expressive wines of intensity, bold flavour and McLaren Vale profile.
