Expert Reviews

95 Points - Campbell Mattinson - Halliday's Wine CompanionCo-fermented before going into new and used French oak. We have headline value on our hands here. It's ripe, sweet, well shaped and persistent, but it's also herbal, varietal and robust. You can enjoy it now or you can take its hand and go with it into the future. Blackcurrant, violet, earth and leather flavours are complemented by a fine, firm spread of tannin. Terrific at the price.
93 Points - Campbell Mattinson - The Wine FrontIf you're looking for a good, no-fuss, high value red wine then this Cabernet Malbec is for you. It's mid-weight, beautifully fruited, tightened just so and lengthy. Indeed, I'm a little bowled over. It tastes of assorted berries, mints, spices and leathers. It's not a big wine but it has a bit of grunt to it. It's good now but it will age well. It has positives at every turn.'

How's it taste?

An amazingly inky & dense crimson with a purple red hue. Intense aromas of dark berry fruits e.g. boysenberry & blackcurrant, with complexing dry savoury spice and lifted violets. The palate is beautifully full flavoured with great texture. The rich, dark berry fruit flavours are very well balanced by the drying tannins from the fruit and the well-integrated oak and gives this wine its great length and persistence of flavour. This is a wine with the depth of fruit and a spicy finish to be enjoyed while still young, but will also reward a few years in the cellar. A lovely balance of fruit and savoury will make this wine a good food match with many foods.

How was it made?

Our Hanna's Hill Cabernet Malbec showcases the intense Frankland River Cabernet and Malbec in partnership. After harvest, the parcels of Frankland River Cabernet and Malbec were co-fermented to ensure seamless integration of the two varieties from the beginning. Careful monitoring during fermentation with frequent pump-overs ensured maximum colour & flavour extraction from the skins. After pressing out, the wine was put to barrel in a mixture of new and older French oak for 10 months maturation before blending and bottling.

Who made it?

Located in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, West Cape Howe was named after a famous coastal landmark nearby. It was founded in 1997 by Brenden and Kylie Smith before being sold to Gavin Berry (ex-Plantagenet) and partners. West Cape Howe source fruit from specific vineyards, and sometimes specific plots, throughout the maritime-influenced Great Southern wine region. Premium parcels of fruit come from their Langton vineyard, planted in 1978. It has some of the most mature vines in the whole Great Southern area. Senior winemaker Gavin Berry prides himself on creating innovative wines that reflect the diversity of the Great Southern region. He makes wines from Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon, to name just a few. The wine styles vary from fresh and fruity, under the Western Australian label, to wines with a more regional focus, under the Great Southern label.
