"Plump, dark fruits, with gamey undertones, and a sprinkling of white pepper. A nod to Northern Rhone?"

Aromas of crushed violets, blackberry fruit, pink and black peppercorns. There’s a wonderful black olive character here too, almost leaning into meat and game tones. Underneath all of this is a subtle mineral note that makes me think of warm stones in the sun. There’s ripeness on the palate, but the elegance and poise of the wine is what stands out. It’s concentrated, but never broad. Ripe, but not extractive. Medium to full-bodied, but savoury, rather than jammy. It flows seamlessly from front to back on a milky core of dark fruits, with pops of red fruited acidity to keep it interesting. The finish is supported by lovely, fine-grained tannins which set up the lengthy and complex end. An outstanding cool-climate Shiraz.

Expert Reviews

93 Points - Ned Goodwin - Halliday's Wine CompanionThis is a good wine, albeit, far from boasting the northern Rhone aromatics that many claim the region is capable of and that I am yet to experience. This said, I have spent a lot of time in the Rhone; little in Tasmania. Green peppercorn meshes with salumi, tapenade, iodine, blueberry and cardamon. Mid-weighted and beautifully floral. Modest length. Appetising and destined for medium-term ageing.
93 Points - Campbell Mattinson - The Wine FrontRiversdale Estate Syrah is a wine I’m keen to follow. It’s from the Coal River Valley. Beautiful cool climate aroma and flavour here. Perfume aplenty, nothing hard or unripe, pepper and herb, twigs and nuts, and of course cherry and plum. It’s svelte, stylish, spicy and refreshing. Mouthfeel is sheer and satiny. Length is very good too. If you’re a cool-climate-shiraz/syrah kind of person then it drinks a treat now; otherwise it will be excellent at maturity.
90 Points - Huon Hooke - The Real ReviewDeep purple/red colour with a raw, primary fruit aroma of dark plum and star anise. The wine is full-bodied and deep, with bright, bold lush fruit and soft tannins.

How's it taste?

Spicy, peppery characters are driven by fragrant cherry and redcurrant fruit, refined tannin and lingering acidity, creating a medium wine. A superb, modern expression of dynamic, savoury Shiraz.

How was it made?

Made from young and old Shiraz vines, this label showcases great aromatic power, rich berry flavours and pepper finishes with length. This label receives Shiraz grapes from differing areas on the property therefore does not show variations in taste from climate differentiation.

Who made it?

The Riversdale Estate family are the sixth generation to work the land and contribute to agriculture. The Estate boasts the largest privately owned vineyard in the Coal River Valley with 40 hectares of vine plantation. The gentle undulating land to the waterfront provides a unique maritime influence, micro-climate and an ideal environment for the large vineyard. These characteristics contribute to the growing and making of award-winning wine.
