The Collective Review

It was way back in 1973 that Andrew Pirie first founded Pipers Brook Vineyard. Pirie, who wrote his PhD on ideal sites for cool climate viticulture, believed this area could make world-class wines, and in 1995, he released one of the Apple Isle's first sparklings. Pirie, with his eponymously named fizz, quickly put Tasmania on the global map for quality fizz. Indeed, his Pirie sparkling was even drunk by the late Queen Elizabeth II on at least two occasions.

Then, in 2001, Pirie sold his business to the Kreglinger organisation and eventually did his own thing. In turn, with figurehead Pirie out, the sparklings of Kreglinger didn't have that same cache.

Yet the wines kept getting better, albeit without the same fanfare. Indeed, just last year, the 2017 Kreglinger Sparkling Rosé was declared Best Sparkling Rosé at the 2023 Halliday Awards, and you don't have to go far to find glowing reviews across the range.

All of which brings us to the glorious 2017 Kreglinger Vintage Brut. Sourced from a single vineyard (the Hills Vineyard) not far from the Kreglinger winery in Pipers Brook, this is an ideal example of what the label can deliver. Fermented in barrel, with malolactic fermentation giving volume and richness, this is sparkling wine to compete with Champagne. It's fizz of power, complexity, and length. Interestingly, while the noise might not be the same as the Pirie days, this sparkling sells too. Unfortunately, the 2017 vintage is now members only at cellar door, with no indication of when the next release will drop. It's now a rare bird.

A rare bird that now looks very affordable in global Champagne and sparkling terms.

60/40% pinot noir/chardonnay. Traditional method; aged 44 months on lees; 6.25g/L dosage. The powerful 2017 season in Pipers River delivers considerable presence and character of a panoply of fruit from apple and pear, to spicy berries and cherries. The precision of this outfit delivers impressive tension and line, while building all the creaminess and silkiness of barrel fermentation. It's compelling from the outset, and will evolve to wonderful places over the coming years.

Winemakers Note

Hand harvested in the cold morning hours from our Hills Vineyard in Pipers River, the cool fruit was very carefully whole bunch pressed extracted only the most delicate juice. Selected parcels were cool fermented in barrel to retain vibrant regional fruit characters, with subsequent malolactic fermentation and battonage to create exceptional texture and creaminess. Hand-crafted, this wine was blended from only the best individual parcels to create a wine of beauty and complexity. Made in the Traditional Method this wine underwent secondary ferment in bottle and was then bottle aged for over 3 years before release. Production Pinot Noir 60%, Chardonnay 40%. Dosage: 6.25g/l.
