2017 Kilikanoon Mort's Block Watervale Riesling

2017 Kilikanoon Mort's Block Watervale Riesling

Sabine Duval

"Kilikanoon has long been a favourite producer but this vintage of their Mort’s Block Riesling is off the charts. Floral aromas and lemon/lime acidity provide the character but it’s the intensity that marks it out."

Kilikanoon's brilliant Clare Valley Riesling is back again. You know what is coming here - oceans of lime juice, a bucketload of crisp acidity and a long long finish.

Expert Reviews

Hand-picked, free-run juice cold-settled. The bouquet wastes no time in establishing the region, variety and quality of this single vineyard, multi-block riesling. The floral bouquet leads into a palate of striking intensity, texture and structure, lime and lemon both claiming ascendancy, neither winning. 96 points - James Halliday's Wine Companion

How's it taste?

Appearance: Pale straw in appearance with brilliant clarity and youthful green tints. Nose: Lifted Riesling profile; lemon curd, hints of tropical fruits and freshly squeezed kaffir limes round out the nose. Palate: Limes, citrus rind and subtle tropical nuances wrapped around a core of spine tingling acidity confidently define the cool 2017 vintage conditions. A potent and zesty finish completely frame the canvas of a wine destined to live long in the cellar.

How was it made?

Hand selected parcels were chosen from across our famed Golden Hillside vineyards, including the original Mort’s Block Vineyard that started it all. 100% Watervale fruit, only minutes from the Kilikanoon winery.

Who made it?

Kilikanoon was founded by Kevin Mitchell in 1997 with a vision to create premium quality wines from estate owned vineyards. The company retains its 'family run' feel regardless of broad vineyard acquisition. In recent years Kilikanoon has produced wines from France as an addition to their portfolio, including a Vouvray from the Loire Valley and Syrah based wines from the Rhone Valley. The consortium has also purchased the historic Seppeltsfield winery in the Barossa Valley, famed for its world leading fortified wines. Located in the premium wine growing region of Clare Valley, South Australia, Kilikanoon owns and controls over 500 hectares of vineyards throughout South Australia. Famed sites like the Mort’s Block vineyard, planted by Mort Mitchell, the father of Kilikanoon founder and chief winemaker Kevin Mitchell, are a focus for premium wines. Shiraz is the foremost variety for Kilikanoon, but there has been great interest in their Riesling wines, particularly from Mort's Block. The range of Kilikanoon wines are known for being full flavoured and often muscular in style. The winemaking is overseen by Kevin Mitchell and takes place at the Kilikanoon purpose-built winery. Open ferments, basket pressing, new oak and fruit ripeness play a large part in the winemaking process.

We don't seem to have the exact wine you are after.. However, here are some of my favourites that I think work for all occasions, be it a BBQ or a fancy dinner.
