Howard Vineyard Winemaker Tom Northcott has cracked the Chardonnay code. After years of making wine and selling grapes to other top Chardie makers, he has perfected the recipe for the perfect Adelaide Hills Chardonnay - and this new 2017 Amos is his best wine yet.

It comes from a block that Tom calls the 'Hill of Gold' thanks to a perfect aspect and slope. The grapes from this plot are then handpicked, hand-sorted and barrel fermented... the works!

The result is a lovely full bodied, yet elegant Chardonnay of real class. Real class, and now at a very very good Cracka price

How's it taste?

The wine displays cool climate Chardonnay characteristics of citrus fruits and white peach with delicate floral notes while the oak maturation and lees stirring imparts a very clean but complex finish. This wine delivers incredible length and lingers on the pallet with crisp natural acidity

How was it made?

This single vineyard, estate grown Chardonnay comes from our Schoenthal Vineyard located 450m above sea. Using the Bernard Clones 76 and 95 the Chardonnay is handpicked, chilled, hand sorted, whole bunch pressed. Using only the free run juice its barrel fermented in 33% new French oak, 33% 2nd fill and 33% seasoned French oak for 9 months. We used 2 types of yeast and 20% natural barrel ferment to add complexity and structure to the wine.

Who made it?

In 1890, Amos William Howard discovered subterranean clover thriving naturally in a picturesque valley in the Adelaide Hills. Howard Vineyard’s stone barn Cellar Door and premium red vineyard are located in Nairne, on the site of this original farm. Subterranean clover continues to grow at this site, restoring Nitrogen and ensuring the health and quality of the soil in this spectacular vineyard. 30km away, their high altitude (470m), cool climate white vineyard at Schoenthal (“Beautiful Valley” in German) is one of the Adelaide Hill’s finest sites for growing fresh, crisp Sparkling and white wines. It is these two unique vineyard sites that enable them to grow exceptional white and red grapes without compromise, and the Estate grown Picnic, Clover and Amos wines are renowned for their delicate notes and distinctive fruit purity. The winery is headed up by Tom Northcott. Tom oversees all vineyard and winemaking operations and his philosophy is simple; to make textural, cool climate wines that are light and elegant with a finesse that reflects the terroir of our vineyards.
