"Jubey red fruits. Mid weight and peppery, but a bit confected for me."

Felix Gentle

"Floral notes and spicy black fruits. Easy style"

Felix Gentle

Another lovely medium bodied red from the Procella label - an offshoot from the all-conquering Moppity winery - this Shiraz sits on the borderline between meaty, hearty flavours and then something spicier and more elegant.

You can see why the Hilltops has so much promise for the cool(er) climate Shiraz of the future.

Expert Reviews

95 Points - James Halliday - Halliday's Wine CompanionCold-soaked 5 days, open-fermented, 12 days on skins, matured in French puncheons and hogsheads (25% new) for 12 months. This is a luscious, layered wine with an abundance of blackberry, black cherry and plum wrapped in a custom-designed suit, oak providing the lining. That vintage again.
95 Points - Sam Kim - Wine OrbitCombining elegance and power, this splendid shiraz shows Black Doris plum, violet, dark cherry and subtle spice aromas on the nose, leading to a delightfully flowing palate that is supple and silky. The wine offers pristine fruit flavours and smooth mouthfeel, wrapped in fine tannins, making it enticing and most pleasing. At its best: now to 2027.

How's it taste?

A captivating nose of vivid red fruits and spice. From nose to palate there is a seamlessness to this wine. You will find succulent, juicy summer fruits on the palate, lifted by white pepper and fragrant spice. The palate is powerful yet refined with bright lifted fruits, rich concentrated berries and fine integrated tannins. The finish is long and in complete harmony.

How was it made?

Viticulture: Hand selected fruit sourced from five clones planted to various aspects, elevations and soil types. Yields were small but flavours were both concentrated and captivating. Winemaking: The fruit was cold soaked for 5 days before being inoculated in open fermenters. The wine was fermented gradually over 12 days then matured in French Puncheons and Hogsheads (25% new) for 12 months.

Who made it?

A family owned & run winery, Jason & Alecia Brown’s Coppabella Vineyard is the only James Halliday, five star rated winery in Tumbarumba. The Brown's are best known as the family behind Moppity Wines in the Hilltops, with the Coppabella project based around a mature vineyard in Tumbarumba (that was the second planted in the region, incidentally). Chardonnay & Pinot Noir are the Coppabella stars, but there is scope for all sorts of cool climate styles here. Promising property in a region that is just waiting for its moment in the sun.
