2017 Cape Bernier Tasmanian Pinot Noir

Katie Zhang

"Red raspberry fruit, has a really fun fruitiness too it. Like raspberry lollies. But it's still not sweet, with more earthiness than sweetness. Long palate and fine tannins."

Expert Reviews

95 Points - James Halliday - Halliday's Wine CompanionEstate-grown, open-fermented, matured in French oak for 9 months. Has the depth and power that come naturally in many parts of Tasmania, with spices and violets on the bouquet, then a palate that is complex both in terms of texture and structure, and also in its aromas and flavours. It has a lattice work of fine tannins on which red cherry and spice fruit are displayed with all their come-hither qualities.

92 Points - Huon Hooke - The Real ReviewMedium red/purple colour with a floral, strawberry and raspberry aroma, fruit-driven and fresh, with a very sweet palate, which has a suggestion of liqueured cherries. There's also alcohol warmth and some emery-like tannin to close. A little straightforward at this stage but succulent: a style that gives a lot of pleasure
90 Points - Toni Paterson MW - The Real ReviewPiercing, high-toned cranberry and red cherry aromatics. The palate is poised and tight on the front of the palate, then fans out beautifully on the finish. Refreshing fresh herb accents dance their way through the palate. Lemony freshness gives the wine lift and energy. Lovely

How's it taste?

Black cherry & liquorice aromas are complemented by fine tannins and savoury spice flavours characteristic of the vineyard. Drink now or cellar for 3-5 years to enjoy its full potential.

How was it made?

All Cape Bernier grapes are hand reared and handpicked at harvest to ensure the best interpretation of the terroir comes through in the highest quality wines.

Cape Bernier's Pinot Noir has extensive leaf plucking done during the ripening season to expose the beautiful fruit to as much sun as possible. This explains the full body and silky tannins, plus the beautiful ripe berry fruit flavours of our wine that balance the natural acidity, while the cool climate adds spice.

Who made it?

Cape Bernier Vineyard was awarded "Tasmanian Vineyard of the Year 2010" for excellence in viticulture and vineyard management. Awarded by Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania, it is judged by an expert panel comprising both leading viticulturists and researchers. The underlying Cape Bernier winemaking philosophy is that "great wines are made in the vineyard." Cape Bernier Vineyard has four hectares under vine and is situated at Bream Creek on Tasmania's east coast overlooking historic Marion Bay. The climate and location of the site largely determine the selection of varietals, with the emphasis on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The aim of Cape Bernier Vineyard is to produce wines of the very highest quality which reflect the unique terrroir of the site. The Cape Bernier wines are classic examples of what can be achieved when Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay are grown in a genuinely cool climate. Cape Bernier Pinot Noir is the flagship wine in the range of products, followed by a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and a Pinot Noir Rose. The Chardonnay is the more serious of the whites with the Pinot Gris being the first wine of each vintage.

When people ask me what my favourite wine is I say “Riesling!” then I follow up with “Shiraz, Cabernet, Champagne ohhh and Pinot Noir!”. Basically, if it tastes delicious I’m here for it, regardless of the varietal. Here are a few vino’s I’ve enjoyed recently, check them out:
