You don't hear enough about Adelina given their ideal location, old vines and the infinite talent of Col McBryde and Jen Gardner. This superb Shiraz Mataro is another top release that could be the perfect wine for any lover of Wendouree Shiraz Mataro. Deep, but still more medium than full bodied, with richness, tannins, flavour... and real focus.
Real Clare Valley red this.

Expert Reviews

95 Points - Nick Stock - jamessuckling.comAn expressive and modern young blend, delivering aromas of spicy red and dark plums, blueberries and dark cherries. Gently meaty notes and attractive oak influence, too. The palate has a ripe and sweet core of fleshy fruit flavors, as well as a smooth, stony tannin texture. Terrific focus, which is the Adelina hallmark.'
94 Points - Mike Bennie - The Wine FrontFrom vines that stretch back over and up to around 100 years old. The fruit hangs out in old barrels and concrete for its maturation. Adelina quietly redefining wine styles from Clare Valley, and definitively at the top of the pack from the region. The wines, particularly the reds, pack in flavour, vitality and, importantly, fine-firm fruit tannin profile, where many from the region rely on heft, oak, ripe fruit for their character, which is fine, but at times clumsy. Anyways. Off the little soapbox. Sweet red cherry, rose petal scents, raspberry, dried cranberry. The gist, red fruits, lots of them. There’s spice, salty liquorice and brambly-herbal things too. Medium weight in the palate, hemmed with powdery, shapely, pumice-stone-like tannins – architecture is great, the feel great, the drinking experience ultra-satsifying. The pool of fine amaro-Campari like coolness-herbiness-sour red fruits to close, the clincher. Yum. Such a lovely, sophisticated wine for the bucks.'

How's it taste?

A medium bodied, plush and delicious wine. Pretty fruit, mineral tones with a delightful tannin and acid balance. Beautifully lifted with boysenberry & charcuterie notes. It's an expressive and vibrant wine.

How was it made?

Typically red sandy sites on clay base, slate and limestone predominate as well. Elevation varies between 430-460m. All within a close proximity of the Adelina Estate vineyard. Fruit was hand picked, destemmed and fermented with selected yeast. Maceration times varied between 20 and 55 days on skins. Post pressing the wine was racked to large format french oak (35%) and concrete tank (65%) for malo (indigenous bacteria) and maturation. 6,168 bottles produced.

Who made it?

The Adelina vineyards are situated in Spring Farm Valley, just south of the township of Clare. Their neighbours include the vineyards of Wendouree, Aberfeldy and Sevenhill Cellars. The small Adelina plantings were originally established around 1910; mostly Shiraz and Grenache with small plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. The vineyard is right next door to Birk’s Wendouree so we know the terroir is good! The Gardner family has owned the Spring Farm Estate, which is the site of both the Adelina winery and vineyards, since 1986. Prior to the inception of Adelina Wines in 2000, the property was managed by Will and Elaine Gardner, and the fruit was sold to Tim Adams. In 2002, Col McBryde and Jen Gardner, Will and Elaine’s daughter, took over responsibility for the vineyards and launched Adelina wines which are made exclusively from the Estate vineyards. The pair has been involved in winemaking and research since the mid-90s.
