Expert Reviews

94 Points - James Halliday - Halliday's Wine CompanionFrom seven growers in the north western districts of the Barossa Valley. A densely packed and powerful wine, each lot of grapes separately open-fermented, thence to new and used puncheons from four countries. Deeply coloured and complex, the oak is presently flexing its muscles, and the ripe tannins and the black fruits, dark chocolate and spices are keeping a respectful distance.
93 Points - Huon HookeVery deep red/purple colour with a toasty, chocolaty and mocha-like nose. The palate is dense and chewy with loads of tannin and extract. This is a big, bold shiraz with lots of density, richness and structure, which promises to age long-term. It's great value for money.
93 Points - Gary Walsh - The Wine FrontRich black fruit, spice and dark fruit cake, some floral perfume, mint and toasty oak. Big flavour, dark berries and tar, thick sandy tannin, fresh blackberry acidity, positive oak seasoning, and a clean long finish. Hearty and good. Plenty to sink your teeth into here.
90 Points - Toni Paterson MW - The Real ReviewIntense, juby fruit that needs a while to open up. The palate is intense and concentrated with plum conserve and blackberry flavours. Full-bodied and richly flavoured. Needs time

How's it taste?

The palate is plump, rich and full-bodied. It is so generously flavoured with complex ripe dark fruits. This intense fruit is supported by apparent but not intrusive oak, adding further complexity and richness. There are natural fine chalky tannins giving the wine a robust structure. It is seamless with all elements in perfect harmony. A very lengthy finish completes this solid wine. This is an extremely balanced Shiraz with fruit, oak and tannin working together.

How was it made?

Each vineyard was harvested at optimum maturity across a two month period from February 12th to April 6th. Following harvest, each individual lot of grapes was crushed into a separate open top fermenter. During fermentation, hand pump-overs gently extracted colour and flavour from the grapes. After 7-10 days on skins the fermented grapes were pressed with a traditional press. The wines were then filled to new and seasoned French and American oak hogsheads for maturation for 24 months before each lot of wine was racked from the barrel and carefully blended. The wine was bottled without fining, ensuring the true expression of the vineyards in the bottle.

Who made it?

'Pirathon' is an ancient word meaning pinnacle, peak, summit etc. It was chosen to represent this Shiraz-focused brand, because Shiraz is surely the pinnacle grape of the Barossa region.

Pirathon was established in 2005 and is today under stewardship of young gun winemaker, Adam Clay. Adam and his team source grapes from several vineyards in North-Western Barossa, including the sub-regions of Greenock, Moppa, Ebenezer, and others. The various different micro-climates and terroir of these sub-regions give Adam the opportunity to craft wines that express the unique qualities of the region and variety.

The grapes for Pirathon Shiraz are traditionally handcrafted in open top fermenters and basketpressed before maturing in barrel. Each vineyard adds its own exclusive dimension to Pirathon Shiraz and combined they produce the ultimate blend.
