2016 Pagos de Araiz Roble Navarra DO
This Pagos de Araiz is the perfect introduction to Spanish reds - an amazing, juicy, full-bodied red with great tannins.
A blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Merlot, it comes from Navarra, which is such an underrated region, and this is an underpriced wine for the quality in the bottle.
How's it taste?
Clean and bright aromas of fresh red fruit with mild toasty notes. The palate is full and moreish, with a silky texture. Fruit and spice characters are supported by fine-grained tannins, leading to a persistent finish.
How was it made?
2016 was a good year for the vineyard. After a cold, but not very wet winter, the spring was mild and the summer was warm with little rain and continued well into the autumn. The quantity of the harvest was moderate due to our own yield control systems. The state of the grapes was perfect, thanks to the mild and sunny weather in spring and summer. Each parcel of grapes is processed separately in order to obtain the different aromatic qualities and flavour profiles of each varietal and its level of ripeness. Fermentation and maceration last 15 days at controlled temperatures, involving daily pumping-over and plunging. After malolactic fermentation, the wine spends on average 6 months in American oak barrels.
