2016 Vasse Felix Filius Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon
Filius is the "second label" for Vasse Felix, but there are plenty of winemakers who would be happy to have this as their "first" wine.'

The GT Wine team have hit the nail on the head - this is indeed superstar wine given the very modest price. A classy Margaret River Cabernet, that perfectly balances out fruit flavour with fine tannins and real structure. A red of class and at a stupendously sharp price.
The Filius punches well above its weight and is often a go-to cabernet when I'm looking for some modestly priced drinking.' 95 points - Ray Jordan
Mighty good cabernet to be the third tier of Vasse's cabernet-dominant brigade. This has slightly more palate grunt than previous wines, but still with that distinctive angular style. Plenty of leafy black fruits with an edge of savoury black olive. So bright and with so much energy on the palate. Cellar 8 years.' 94 points - Ray Jordan
The entry level Cabernet from Vasse Felix, and very good it is too. Perfume, earthy lead pencil stuff, dark fruits, a little bay leaf and spice. It’s medium-bodied, dark fruit, tobacco, dark chocolate liquorice, herbal tension, crisp and so well defined, firm fine tannin, tight long finish. Complex savoury flavour, excellent shape, and high drinking pleasure. Tops.' 93 points - Gary Walsh - The Wine Front
Deepish red/purple colour, with a very smoky sulfide and toasty oak bouquet that tends to dominate the fruit at first sniff. It does develop cedar, violet, mulberry and tobacco notes with airing. The wine is intense and full-bodied, with abundant cassis cabernet fruit spliced to generous oak throughout the palate. The finish is firm and tight, dry and slightly grippy. It would be best with protein when young.' 91 points - Huon Hooke
How's it taste?
Vasse Felix have done it again. Here we have yet another cedary, bay leaf and blackcurrant laden red that is just packed with character. And tannins! Made for the cellar, it's the best value Margaret River Cabernet ANYWHERE!
How was it made?
Deep, savoury Cabernet characters of blackcurrant, dark cherry, damp earth and cedar mingle with a spicy complexity care of the vibrant Malbec portion (14%) Luscious and juicy upfront, the dark berry fruit is complemented by savoury elements of beef stock and dried woody herbs. There is a wonderful length of flavour as the palate transitions to a fine, textural and dusty drying finish in classical Cabernet style.
Who made it?
Vasse Felix was the first vineyard and winery to be established in Western Australia’s Margaret River region. Established in 1967 by Dr Tom Cullity, it is situated in the Willyabrup sub region where ancient soils and cooling Southern and Indian Ocean breezes provide ideal conditions for fine wine production. Vasse Felix is owned and operated by the Holmes a Court family. The Vasse Felix winemaking team shares a common goal in crafting wines of exceptional quality from unique vineyard sites. Under the direction of Chief Winemaker Virginia Willcock, the objective remains the same today as it did 40 years ago. A precise understanding of local viticulture and environment is coupled with a hands on winemaking approach. The Vasse Felix style shows concentration and complexity while retaining signature elegance and finesse. It is a testament to winemaking and viticultural dedication and attention to detail throughout the year. The revered Vasse Felix Heytesbury wines are produced in limited quantities from a barrel selection of the finest fruit parcels each vintage. Vasse Felix continues to be one of the most highly awarded and visited wineries in Australia.
