Expert Reviews

91 Points - Huon HookeDeep red colour with a good purple tint. The bouquet is mellow, complex and earthy, with a meaty charcuterie-like overtone and soft, fine tannins on the palate, which is elegantly medium-bodied. There is fruit sweetness and some cool-grown vegetal nuances, subtle, as if there were some stems in the ferment. Really nice balance, harmony and texture.

How's it taste?

Concentrated notes of cherry blackberry and plum, hints of spice and subtle oak characters of dark chocolate and vanillin. Vibrant raspberry and blackberry with a touch of chocolate and peppery spice. Subtle vanillin oak characters with soft, lingering tannins on the finish.

How was it made?

Coonawarra's 2016 vintage was an early one. An ideal growing season of slightly above average temperatures and dry conditions produced outstanding cool climate style Shiraz fruit harvested at optimum maturity. Oak Maturation: This wine was matured in a combination of older French and American oak barriques for three months.

Enjoy now or will cellar well up to five years. This wine is vegetarian and vegan friendly.

Who made it?

Katnook was the site of wine pioneer John Riddoch’s first commercial Coonawarra vintage in 1896. In 1980, the second chapter began when wine was again crafted in Riddoch’s original winery by Wayne Stehbens. He was one of the longest serving winemakers in Australia. Wayne was responsible for a string of remarkable achievements such as twice winning the Jimmy Watson Trophy, as well as a double trophy at the prestigious International Wine and Spirit Competition in 2003. Accomplished winemaker, Tim Heath, assumed the role of Senior Winemaker in June 2018. Set in the centre of Coonawarra’s grape growing district, a short distance from the town of Penola, Katnook occupies vineyard sites on the famed Terra Rossa strip of the region. Katnook aims to make wines which show subtlety, intrigue and complexity. Reflecting the essence of Coonawarra’s terroir is integral to Katnook's winemaking approach. Cabernet Sauvignon is the undoubted hero of the Coonawarra region, however other red varietals such as Shiraz and Merlot are equally impressive.
