Made as a homage to the great wines of Maurice O'Shea in the Hunter Valley, this blend of Hawke's Bay Syrah and Pinot Noir is actually really good.

It's meaty and peppery and spicy like you'd expect from a warm year Hawke's Bay red. But there's this lovely bright red fruit too thanks to the Pinot Noir.

The mix just works.

Expert Reviews

This is a blend of 76% Syrah from Redmetal vineyards and 24% Pinot Noir from Maraekakaho, the fruit hand-picked, indigenous yeast fermented with 100% whole berries to 12.5% alc., the wine spending up to 35 days on skins and 12 months in approx. 45% new French oak barriques. Dark, moderately deep ruby-red colour with light purple hues, youthful in appearance. The nose is softly full with ripe dark red and blackberry fruit of Syrah, showing savoury black pepper and spice notes, entwined with dark raspberry Pinot Noir fruit intermingling with dark herbs along with funky, savoury game elements and undergrowth elements. Medium-bodied, soft, interwoven flavours of ripe blackberry fruit, dark raspberries black pepper and florals feature on the palate with savoury spices, herbs and undergrowth. Some funky game elements unfold. The mouthfeel is bright and lively and the fruit is supported by supple tannins and crisp acidity. The wine carries to a lively finish with subtly rich flavours of rasp 88 points - Raymond Chan

An intriguing blend of syrah and pinot noir. Beautifully perfumed on the nose showing dark plum, blueberry, clove and cedar characters with a touch of black pepper. The palate is finely textured and elegantly weighted, offering pristine fruit flavours and delicate savoury notes, beautifully structured by fine, chalky tannins. 90 points - Sam Kim

How's it taste?

A savoury, complex and elegant wine with currant and violet aromas. Palate:The palate is littered with earthy flavours, smoke and hints of star anise and clove. Chalky tannins and bright acidity provide drive and length, resulting in a seamless finish.

How was it made?

The 2015 harvest was the kind of vintage where everything gets ripe and vineyard managers are relaxed. The Syrah came from the red metal vineyards just west of Hastings and the Pinot Noir from our vineyard on the terraces at Mararekakaho, a little further up river. Even in a great vintage, yields need to be kept low and canopies well - tended with these late ripening varieties.

Who made it?

About 25 years ago, Rod McDonald arrived in Hawke’s Bay with a love for making wine and everything he owned packed into the back seat of a small car. A green-horn cellarhand doing his time on the winery floor, and frankly loving every minute of it. No amount of day-dreaming then could have predicted that a patch of dirt on the East Coast of the North Island, New Zealand, would be where Rod landed, settled in and started to dig into what makes great wine taste like where it comes from. Now branded as Te Awanga Estate, Rod and his team continue to produce beautiful wines from Hawke's Bay across a variety of different styles, all of which showcase the Hawke's Bay region to the fullest degree.
