A 71/29% blend, wild yeast-fermented, with no acid additions; 87% of the wine was matured for 5 months in French barriques (62% new). Follows in a long and proud tradition of exceptionally complex wines that rely on gentle persuasion, not brute force or, if you prefer, seduction rather than rape. The flavours are so attractive and mouthfilling now, it is easy to forget the wine will mature with grace for well over a decade.

Cullen vineyard has established a triumphant benchmark for Australian SBS, articulately expressing a unique and pronounced mineral structure. With an almost two-thirds lead of sauvignon blanc, matured for six months in French oak (two-thirds new), one would expect fruit power and heavy structure. Remarkably, it is quite the contrary, backward, floral, understated, crunchy and fine. Spicy grapefruit, crunchy lemon zest and apple contrast with wonderfully balanced and subtle hazelnut complexity. A triumph.

The typical complex make-up of 69% sauvignon blanc and 31% semillon, with 47% of the wine fermented in French oak, 74% new. The ultra-fragrant bouquet and intense palate are most remarkable for the way they have absorbed the barrel fermentation; it's also virtually impossible to decide whether the aromas and flavours are on the citrus/herbal side, or the riper passionfruit spectrum. Does that matter? I sincerely doubt it.

A deeper fruit presence here, and more richness: there s a distinctive lemon and barley edge to the nose and palate, an edge of lemon oil and fine, fine citrus presence. The palate is rippling with taut lemon and apple flavour, acidity is crunchy and drives long; mouth-wateringly fresh. Will age superbly.

Complex and barrel-fermented, with texture and balance. Scented with a lightly herbal, floral and toasty bouquet whose pure aromas of fresh melon, gooseberries and passionfruit reveal a hint of tropical fruits, it's tightly focused but handsomely oaked. Long and chalky, with lightly herbal flavours of gooseberries, melon and tropical fruits culminating in a fresh finish of steely acids, it departs with a lingering funkiness and a briny note of oyster shell.

This consistently outstanding wine gets a fair amount of French oak - 47 per cent in fact with about 74 per cent of that new. Perfumed aromas splice together nuts and grassy edges with some creamy stone fruit. On the palate the oak holds things in check to gradually release the intense and powerful fruit flavours. Still a pup and it will fill out with age into one of the best.

A blend of 66% sauvignon blanc matured in new French oak for 5 months and 34% semillon with a wide range of picking dates and baumes (9.7 to 12.2). It shows absolutely no green/unripe fruit, just aromatic citrus and herb notes on the long, intense palate that I can only describe as slippery.

It's long and creamy, with a pure core of tangy fruit charmingly augmented by wild ferment-derived complexity, finishing with focus, balance and a lingering suggestion of wet slate.
