The 20th vintage of this wine has a deep, youthful red/purple colour and a rich, chocolate, spice, sweet plum and vanilla bouquet, which returns with good power and impact on the finish. The wine is medium to full-bodied, fleshy in its texture with supple tannins and easy drinkability, although it will surely age well.

After a little swirling in the glass, it unveils aromas of plump blueberry, plum, mocha, licorice and florals. Medium to full bodied, it offers an intricate play between texture and acidity, juicy fruit and taut, sandy tannins, hinting at stony minerality. There's an old-fashioned feel about this wine. It's comfortable in its own skin and doesn't try too hard to be modern.

It's a sweet and generous red with satiny texture and a warm burst to the finish. The mid palate is a river of berried flavour and while there's coffee-cream oak at play too it's that warm flow of fruit that really wins the day. It will be a touch too sweet and warm for some; it will be nectar to others.

How's it taste?

Deep rich red colour hints at the intensity of this wine. The nose is full of regional ripe plum, dark cherries with a pinch of white pepper and sweet vanillin. Flavours carry onto a palate of big soft fruit, balanced by regional minerality, elegant oak and natural acid. Classic Heathcote shiraz, a rich full wine with a complex structure and a long fresh finish.

How was it made?

After gentle destemming, the fruit was fermented separately in a combination of open and closed fermenters, producing 10 cuvées, each receiving slightly different handling. All were matured in predominately French oak barriques (20% new) in our temperature controlled barrel shed at 16°C for 18 months, during which they were racked three times. The ‘Rufus’ blend is made from the better batches, and pleasingly this year all were deemed good enough, highlighting the strength of the vineyard and the vintage.

Who made it?

Tyrrell's is an iconic Hunter Valley winery renowned for producing some of Australia’s greatest wines. Tyrrell's was established by English immigrant, Edward Tyrrell in 1858 at the foot of New South Wales’ striking Brokenback Range. Today, Tyrrell's is headed up by 4th generation winemaker, Bruce Tyrrell, with the 5th generation hot on his heels! Tyrrell's produces a broad array of wine varieties and styles, ranging from the inexpensive to the luxurious. They have championed the Semillon variety, with their flagship, of course, being the world-renowned Vat 1. They strive to create wines of individual character, flavour and integrity.
