Old vines, a great site and a sturdy winemaking hand - you can't go wrong with the TarraWarra Reserve Pinot Noir. Top tier Yarra Pinot.
TarraWarra Estate Block: H-Block and I Block.
Vine Age & Features: Produced from heritage, low yielding vines at 30 years of age, planted on north facing slopes.
Site Selection: H-Block is the backbone of the Reserve Pinot Noir blend. At 30 years of age, this is one of our icon sites. It consistently produces our highest quality Pinot Noir, the soil is naturally low yielding giving optimum vine balance. I block was planted in 1989, originally as a clone trial block. The years have shown the D5V12 to be most suited to the site, the balance being grafted over in 2001. This clone often performs well in warmer years.
Vintage Notes: 2014 was a warmer vintage, with very low yields. Although the average maximum temperatures were higher, night time temperatures were much lower than average, allowing the fruit to retain acid and develop pure flavours.
Winemaker Notes: The fruit batches are kept separate in barrel and blended to the style intended to express the truest form of the varietal character and the site. A vibrant perfumed aroma of raspberries, rose petals, plum and restrained cedar oak, the wine shows nuances of complexity on the nose. The palate is finely layered opening with pure fruit, a fine texture, grainy tannins and a generous palate. It has wonderful persistence of flavour and excellent potential for long term cellaring. Drink now and over 10 or more years.
James Halliday (2014 Vintage) says
30yo MV6 and 25yo D5V12 estate clones separately fermented and matured, 12 days on skins, matured in French oak (25% new). Clear crimson hue; a truly delicious wine built around a heart of fresh red cherries and red berries, with gossamer silk tannins and perfectly judged French oak. This will change as it ages, with more foresty nuances, but will never be better than it is now.

From the H and I blocks on TarraWarra estate. That info probably means little to most, so the idea is is that this is a Reserve wine from selected smaller plots on a single estate. The vineyards were planted 1983. So often ‘Reserve’ equates to more oak, bigger wines, not so here, thankfully – it serves the best fruit well.
Transparent, lacy Pinot Noir of high drinkability and some charisma. Raspberry, strawberry fruit scents meshed to black pepper, clove, briar, turned earth. Good sweet-savoury hit to start. Some chalky fringes to the wine in the mouth but it’s all about that layered, crispness of pristine, sourish-crunchy textured fruit going on. Sheets and sheets of light, lean flavour wash the earthy palate and finish in the distance. It’s bright but reserved. Pretty nicely done.

Huon Hooke (2014 Vintage) says
Medium to light red colour with a purple tint. There's a muffled, dried flowers, earthy and pot-pourri bouquet, lacking clarity of fruit perhaps. It's light and lean on the tongue, with savoury developed flavours and very light, soft tannins. A very enjoyable drinking Pinot, which is not simple and will not pall. An understated, subtle style, typical of this winery.

Wine Companion (2015 Vintage) says
The top cuvee of TarraWarra's Pinot Noir stable is sourced from the H and I Block, planted in '83. A bright, light ruby colour, aromas of blood plum, red and dark cherry and a hint of orange rind tee off. The palate is ultra-silky to ethereal, expanding into flavours of autumnal mulch, twig, tea leaf and root spice, all serving as a poised juxtaposition to the sweet aromas. Yet the vanillin oak turns to bitter chocolate and a smudge of mocha; overzealous and overwhelming. This may come right and the wine more intriguing, in 5-8 years.
