A blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and malbec. A core of sweet fruit and alcohol offers appeal and accessibility to this multi-layered wine. Cherry, berry, fresh herbs and spicy oak.

Expert Reviews

Full, dark ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the rim. The bouquet is soft and fine with integrated, and somewhat reserved aromas of soft red berry fruits interwoven with plums, cedary oak, dried herbs and nuances of savoury, secondary elements of earth, leather and game. This is gentle and harmonious in expression. Medium-full bodied, the fruit expression is a little restrained, but builds to show a softly concentrated heart of savoury dark red berry fruits, plums, dried herbs, earth and cedar. The flavours are harmoniously melded and unfold in waves. The fruit is supported by fine-grained tannin structure providing a dry grip, and the acidity is soft and integrated. This has good sweetness and presence, and the wine carries to a soft, stylish, lingering finish. A little restrained in flavour, this Merlot blend has rich fruit presence with harmonious layers of savoury cedar and earthy interest and good structure and grip. 88 points - Raymond Chan

How's it taste?

Pegasus Bay is one of New Zealand's leading winemakers and this is a classic, almost French cabernet style. Mid weight, savoury and herbal with graphite fruits it is a stunning example of this mighty red blend.

How was it made?

Appearance: Deep ruby colour.

Nose: Its abundant aromas and flavours suggest wild blackberries, purple plums, cassis, and chocolate mocha, with underlying hints of vanilla pod, spice and roasted nuts.

Palate: The palate is rich but muscular with a backbone of ripe tannins that provide a savoury aftertaste of black olive tapenade.

Who made it?

The Donaldson family have been seriously involved in wine since the early 1970’s and were pioneers of the North Canterbury region and Pegasus Bay is ver much a family affair, with each member taking an important role in the production, making and marketing of the wines. The family's philosophy is simple: their aim is to grow grapes of the highest quality, which fully express the features of the vineyard, and to handle these with the utmost respect. Minimal intervention at all stages from vine to bottle typifies our approach. they believe in traditional sustainable viticultural management, low crop levels, minimal handling of fruit during processing and gentle pressing. They allow wines to go through natural malolactic fermentation and clarification by settling. Pegasus Bay wines are made with estate grown fruit from their Waipara Valley vineyard and they aspire to capture the unique flavours of the vineyard in their wine.
