This 2013 Nals Margreid Punggl Pinot Grigio is what Pinot Grigio should taste like. As Huon Hooke said this 'has far more depth, concentration and extract than possibly any other Grigio I can recall'.
Hailing from Alto Adige, in far northern Italy near the Austrian border, this wine comes off an 80yr old vineyard on a small hill (Punggl means hill in the local South Tyrol dialect). Matured for 7 months in large oak, it is textured, full and bloody delicious - about as far from the average boring Grigio as you can get!
Plenty of others like this wine too, as it scored 2 glasses from Italy's influential Gambero Rosso publication, and 93 points from James Suckling who said that it had 'lots of flavour and freshness' and is 'one of the best Pinot Grigios out there'.
In other words, this is the best Pinot Grigio you can get.
Our Pinot Grigio owes its distinguishing and full-bodied complexion to its origins: 80-year old vines root in nourishing clay soils, which contributes to wines with excellent acidity, length, strength and structure. A stimulating choice as an aperitif or with delicate, light dishes and mushrooms.
At a mere 82-feet high the vineyard called Punggl, meaning hill in South Tyrolean dialect, is characterised by its warm temperatures. It was formed from clay-based sands in the south of Margreid and is home to 80-year-old Pinot Grigio vines.
Serving temperature: 10 °C
Ageing potential: 2-5 years
Huon Hooke (2013 Vintage) says
Medium yellow colour; bright. Rich and smoky, spicy to sniff, the palate quite full-bodied and ample, with abundant flavour, a trace of sweetness in the middle, then a soft but fairly dry finish.
