Expert Reviews

95 Points - James Halliday - Halliday's Wine CompanionThe best parcels of chardonnay are used to make this wine, which spends 9 months on lees in a mix of new and 1-year-old French barrels. It is a particularly rich, mouthfilling style with white peach, nectarine and pineapple matched by creamy/yeasty/nutty characters, pointing to the possibility of mlf; whether or not that is so, this is a good example of the richer style of chardonnay that is being bypassed with crisper, leaner styles.
94 Points - Jeremy OliverA very smart piece of winemaking has helped fashion a tangy, briny and textural chardonnay whose fresh, floral and faintly smoky bouquet of grapefruit, melon, smoked meats and minerals reveals undertones of bathpowder and vanilla oak. Its brightly lit, sumptuous and seamless presence of grapefruit, melon and tropical fruits extends long towards an intensely flavoured finish of fine persistence, augmented by pleasing mineral and savoury qualities.

How's it taste?

The nose is powerful and complex with pure fruit characters of white nectarine and lemon blossom complemented by secondary aromatics of nutty oak. Generous palate weight. Flavours of white nectarine and are complemented by more secondary characters of oak and lees. Exceptional length.

How was it made?

Featured in Homer’s The Odyssey, Ithaca is King Odysseus’ beloved homeland. His Ithaca provided a beacon to guide him home during his ten year return from the Trojan Wars. The Adelaide Hills is our Ithaca – our home and our constant source of inspiration. Our cool climate home is the ideal terroir for the Chardonnay grape, the high altitude, ancient soils and pristine air produce chardonnay grapes with amazing purity of fruit. Our aim is to craft a wine that reflects the variety, vineyard and vintage, confirming the affinity of Chardonnay with the Hills.

Who made it?

In 1994, the Tweddell family purchased a premium property in the sub-region of Lenswood in the Adelaide Hills. The property was carefully selected and planted to 24 hectares of vines with the intent of producing premium wine. Proven varieties such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc were planted, as well as interesting varieties such as Zinfandel and Pinot Gris. In 1996, Nepenthe received approval to build its winery, only the second in the Adelaide hills at the time (the first being Petaluma in 1978). In the backdrop of the cool heights of the Adelaide Hills, we started producing some soul reposing potions of our own: uncompromising wines of outstanding quality and internationally recognised distinction. Wines that, strangely enough, have been impressing both critics and consumers with their varietal faithfulness and subtle Adelaide Hills nuances. From the beginning, our wines have received positive review from the press and numerous medals on the show circuit. In the first few vintages, Nepenthe wines featured in James Halliday’s Top 100, The UK Times Top 100, The Advertiser Top 100, The International Wine Challenge as well as many other feature media articles. The success of the wines is evident in the market place. Currently, Nepenthe sell nationally and our wines are exported to the United Kingdom, USA, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Canada, Switzerland, Holland, Sweden, Denmark and Croatia. In all these markets the press and public have warmly received Nepenthe wines. Due to this demand, in 1997 Nepenthe acquired a property in Charleston within the Adelaide Hills and has planted a further 43 hectares of vineyard. Then in 2002 a 25 hectare vineyard was acquired in Balhannah (where our cellar door is located), and in 2005 Nepenthe acquired its latest vineyard, 38 hectares in Hahndorf, with room for further expansion. Nepenthe also sources fruit from a variety of vineyards throughout the hills. Most fruit Nepenthe receives is managed by Nepenthe Viticulture, part of the Nepenthe Group. This company ensures that Nepenthe only receives the highest quality fruit, ensuring strict control of the grapes that make our award winning wines.

A really great wine deal must must be accompanied by great value. There is nothing better than getting an incredible bottle of wine for a fraction of what similar quality wines sell for. My recommendations gives you the very best "Value for money" wines at different price points.
