Tahbilk is a fifth generation owned winery in the Nagambie lakes sub region of Victoria’s Goulburn Valley. Established in 1860, Tahbilk is Victoria’s oldest winery, and one of Australia's most historic family owned wineries.
What does Tahbilk mean?
The name Tahbilk comes from the language of the Daung-wurrung clans, the first people in the area. They called it tabilk-tabilk which means place of many waterholes. The area is home to a unique meso-climate, influenced by inland lakes and lagoons fed from the Goulburn River.
Is Tahbilk Carbon Neutral?
Tahbilk is one of the few wineries in Australia to be certified as fully carbon neutral with the commitment to restore the environmental balance seen historically by the local Taungurung people. Both winery and vineyard are accredited carboNZero, having achieved a new 45% reduction in total carbon emissions since 2013.
What wines do Tahbilk make?
Tahbilk is home to 200 hectares of vines, including the traditional Rhône Valley varietals Marsanne, Viognier, Roussanne, Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre. Classic varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Verdelho are also present.
Tahbilk’s 1860 Shiraz
Tahbilk's flagship 1860 Vines Shiraz is produced from the estate’s original 1/2 ha of ungrafted, pre-phylloxera Shiraz vines, amongst the oldest surviving in the world. These wines are the pride of the Purbrick family and are among some of the oldest in the world.
Tahbilk’s 1927 Marsanne
Tahbilk holds one of the largest and oldest single holdings of the Marsanne varietal around the globe. Originating from France’s Northern Rhône wine region, the varietal was established at Tahbilk by Eric Stevens Purbrick in 1927.
