MARKET UPDATE

Welcome to our January 2020 Market Update

We’re about to hit the hottest weeks of summer, which means it’s important to keep hydrated at all times. Here at The Wine Collective we’ve got you covered, with a selection of delicious drinks and the most refreshing flavours for even the hottest January day.

The Summer of

Riesling

For too long Australian Riesling has been relegated to the backseat, watching as fashionable grapes like Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris have overtaken them. But I challenge you to find a better summer wine than a chilled glass of dry Riesling, with its low alcohol, lifted fragrance and crisp acidity the perfect match for a long summer afternoon.

We have an array of great dry Riesling for you to choose from, and the quality versus the asking prices could make you cry. Look at the 2019 Robert Stein Riesling featured this week, which has 2 trophies, 7 gold medals and high scores from everyone… and it’s under $25! If it was a Chardonnay, this white would be $100 a bottle! My other pick is the 2019 Pure Clare Riesling, made by the Vickery winemaking team (headed up legend John Vickery) and perhaps the best under $15 white wine that we sell, period.

Spirits

Late last year we added our extended range to The Wine Collective website, which now means almost 1,000 wines, spirits and mixed packs available for your drinking pleasure. Our spirits range in particular has grown to now feature 38 different artisan offerings, covering off summer-friendly sips right through to serious libations.

Some highlights include revered, 97 point scoring Italian Amaro Montenegro which has been praised as ‘one of the lightest and gentlest Amari’ and could be the perfect aperitivo. Or the unique Ki No Tea Kyoto Gin, which incorporates green tea into the blend, the spirit winning the title of ‘Best Contemporary Japanese gin’ at the World Gin Awards.

Pinot

in the Fridge

There’s no need to skip red wine in summer, just pop a bottle of vivacious Pinot Noir in the fridge for half an hour before serving and you’ll get a genuinely refreshing summer drink. I like more rounded styles with a chill, so wines like the 2017 Oakridge Local Vineyard Series Henk Pinot Noir fit the bill would be my go-to choice. A 95 point picture of Pinot perfection from gun winemaker Dave Bicknell in the Yarra Valley it’s not only highly lauded but now at a tremendous price.

Speaking of value, I can’t go past the gold medal-winning 2017 Heirloom Velvet Fog Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir for drink-now pleasure, especially when you can grab a bottle for $19.99 a bottle - half the $40 RRP.
