Unashamedly inspired by the great wines of Europe, the singular focus of YarraLoch is to create world class wines from the Yarra Valley which are distinguished by their elegance, balance and complexity. With only six hectares of vines but scattered across three entirely different sites 70km apart, owner Stephen Wood has found the best site for each of the varieties he is focusing on. Pinot Noir is planted on the Steep Hill vineyard, with a northeast orientation, and a shaley rock and ironstone soil. Cabernet Sauvignon at Kangaroo Ground, with a dry, steep northwest-facing site and abundant sun exposure in the warmest part of the day, ensuring full ripeness, while Chardonnay, Shiraz Merlot and Viognier are planted at the Upper Plenty vineyard, 50km from Kangaroo Ground. This has an average temperature 2C cooler and a ripening period 2-3 weeks later than the warmest parts of the Yarra Valley.
