Kay Brothers Amery
Close
Established in 1890 by Australian born brothers Herbert and Frederick Kay, the Heritage Listed Kays Amery Winery celebrated its first grape crush in 1895 and is the oldest McLaren Vale winery still in founding family hands, with third generation winemaker Colin Kay continuing the family winemaking tradition.
Kay Brothers Amery Winemaking
Kay's are red wine specialists, crafting red wines (and the odd white interloper) from their own 22-hectare Amery Vineyard. All of the Kay Brothers red wines are prepared in open fermenters and pressed using an 80 year old basket press. This archaic (but favourably so) method of pressing is both traditional and gentle, resulting in rich yet soft wines. By varying the combination and percentage of new and used American, French and some spicy Balkan oak, Kay's endeavour to maintain something of a classic 'house style'.
Kay Brothers Wine Types
With plantings dating back to 1892, most of the grape varieties and wine utilised here are quite traditional in nature. The grape varieties grown are Shiraz (including that produced off Block 6, which was first planted in 1892), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Viognier, Grenache, Mataro and Muscat.
