Balnaves of Coonawarra

At the southern end of the Coonawarra’s Terra Rossa strip lies the family owned winery, Balnaves of Coonawarra. Balnaves started as a grower of fine quality Coonawarra fruit and graduated into wine production with the construction of their winery in 1995. Early releases never received the attention they deserved although today Balnaves has risen to become one of Coonawarra’s best-loved wineries, and their finest wine, The Tally, one of the greatest expressions of Coonawarras exceptional terroir. So much so that Balnaves was named ‘Winery of the Year’ in James Halliday’s 2008 Australian Wine Companion. Balnaves of Coonawarra Philosophy The Balnaves vision is to consistently produce full-bodied wines with complexity, rich in structure with notable texture and flavour, the reds in particular having “deeply layered complexity” according to Jeremy Oliver. The wines start to show their best after a minimum of five years of cellaring. Balnaves of Coonawarra Winemaking Led by esteemed winemaker, Pete Bissell, Balnaves wines are exclusively grown and produced in the Coonawarra region, from fruit grown by the Balnaves family. Balnaves of Coonawarra Wine Types Cabernet Sauvignon makes up the majority of plantings at Balnaves of Coonawarra, however Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Chardonnay are also grown. All the wines are robust and deeply flavoured with The Tally, in particular, at the riper end of the Coonawarra style.
