Verdelho is an early ripening variety native to the country of Portugal and known chiefly for the wines of Madeira. It is produced successfully in the Hunter Valley, Langhorne Creek and warmer areas of Western Australia. Verdelho is made in a range of styles and commonly makes broad, fruity wines with tropical and fruit salad flavours. As the variety is thick skinned, some phenolics can be expressed in riper wines. Verdelho generally drinks best in its youth. Louise Radman
